چکیده

We used electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings to examine the processes that enable subjects to intentionally ignore transient, task-irrelevant visual stimuli, keeping such stimuli from interfering with short-term memory for similar, behaviorally relevant visual stimuli (Yotsumoto & Sekuler, in press). Subjects recognition memory was tested for brief, sequentially-presented compound sinusoidal gratings that varied in spatial frequency; in one condition, one of two study items was consistently task irrelevant. Event related potentials (ERPs) were derived from EEG signals synched either to the onset of the to-be-remembered item or to the onset of the to-be-ignored item. When these two ERPs were compared at varying times following stimulus onset and on varying locations on the scalp, we found that early on, the occipital cortex was indifferent to whether the stimulus was to be ignored or remembered. Differences between ignoring and remembering were found in the left frontal area at about 200 msec after stimulus onset, followed by the parietal area at 250 msec, and the occipital area at 300 msec. The early differences in frontal areas suggest top-down inhibitory control; the relatively late onset of occipital modulation suggests that intentional ignoring becomes effective well-after the stimulus becomes visible. Because the world affords far more visual information than can be processed effectively, visual processing must be selective, modulating incoming information, privileging what is behaviorally relevant over what is behaviorally irrelevant. To gain insight into 10 mechanisms that support one critical, but little studied form of visual selectivity we assessed subjects’ visual memory while they attempted to gate or exclude particular briefly-presented items (Tsotsos, 1997; Kastner & Ungerleider, 2000). Ordinarily, as subjects view and try to remember study items in a series, the presence of irrelevant, distractor items can interfere with memory. However, if subjects could completely exclude irrelevant items, visual mem15 ory performance would be unimpaired by the presentation of those distractors. Yotsumoto and Sekuler (in press) recently demonstrated that subjects can successfully ignore one of a Supported by NIH grant 5R01MH068404, NSERC Discovery Grants 42133 and 105494, the Canada Research Chair program, and the Canadian Institute for Health Research fellowship program.

Age-dependent dynamic electrophysiological field potential behavior of atrioventricular node during experimental AF in rabbit

Introduction: Electrophysiological studies have demonstrated a relationship between aging and atrioventricular (AV) nodal conduction and refractoriness. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of nodal aging on dynamic AV nodal field potential recording during atrial fibrillation (AF) in rabbit. Methods: Two groups of male New Zealand rabbits (neonatal 2-week-olds and adult...

Modeling Volatility Spillovers in Iran Capital Market

This paper investigates the conditional correlations and volatility spillovers between the dollar exchange rate return, gold coin return and crude oil return to stock index return. Monthly returns in the 144 observations (2005 - 2017) are analyzed by constant conditional correlation, dynamic conditional correlation, VARMA-GARCH and VARMA-AGARCH models. So this paper presents interdependences in...

Electrophysiological evidence for early interaction between talker and linguistic information during speech perception.

This study combined behavioral and electrophysiological measurements to investigate interactions during speech perception between native phonemes and talker's voice. In a Garner selective attention task, participants either classified each sound as one of two native vowels ([epsilon] and [ae]), ignoring the talker, or as one of two male talkers, ignoring the vowel. The dimension to be ignored w...

Probiotic treatment differentially affects the behavioral and electrophysiological aspects in ethanol exposed animals

Objective(s): Harmful effects of alcohol on brain function including cognitive phenomena are well known. Damage to gut microbiota is linked to neurological disorders. Evidence indicates that intestinal flora can be strengthened by probiotic bacteria. In this study, we evaluated the effect of probiotics administration on LTP induction in rats receiving ethanol.<em...

Speech Dynamics: Epistemological Aspects

Speech is generally looked upon as a succession of events in the time domain and analyzed frame by frame, while ignoring the fact that speech is dynamic. In the present paper, evidence in support of the dynamic nature of speech and dynamic invariance, as well as their consequences on speech research, are discussed.

Effect of sub-effective dose of GABA agonists on attenuation of morphine tolerance in rats: Behavioral and electrophysiological studies

GABAergic drugs can change analgesic effect of morphine. Wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons play an important role in pain transmission and may change behaviors in morphine tolerance. In this study WDR neuron behaviors in morphine tolerant rats and rats treated with GABA agonists, were recorded to elucidate the effect of morphine and GABA agonists on WDR behavioral changes. Rats were divided to 4...
